As part of our commitment to inquiry and project based learning students in the eighth grade reenacted scenes from the Civil War. History teacher Kevin Marks joined forces with Debby Irwin, Performing Arts Chair, Saydi Kaufman, art teacher and Brian Morgan Head of School and former Lieutenant Colonel in the Army, to teach students the strategy behind battles, what hand to hand combat was like and more about what soldier wore. The reenactment was made more realistic with costumes and weapons made in art class. Their understanding of the Civil War was enriched by bringing sciences to life!
Thanks to our student council, and moderator Mrs. Roche, the Middle School students enjoyed meeting the Little Brothers and Sisters. Each year an older student is paired with a younger student as part of a mentoring program. This year students helped each class in a chalk drawing activity in front of the Carriage House.
Congratulations to our forensic team and their coaches. Seventh graders Conor Minutillo, John Colie and Logan Boyce joined with captains Iris knowles, Nicole Galioto and Jill Canavari to win the first North Jersey Junior Forensics League meet. The meet was held at Lacordaire on October 22nd and nine Catholic schools sent a team of six students to compete in the Reading competition. Nicole Galioto won first place and Jill Canavari won second place overall. Alternates Renee Knowles, Chloe Ratte and Katherine Heyman were the ready and able alternates for this meet. Thanks to the guidance of Anne Waldron, Mary Thornton and Anne Utley our student orators were well prepared.
Lacordaire is certainly a vibrant community with activities going on all week long. Even Saturday morning the school has tap dancing lessons, basketball practice and forensics sessions. It is an exciting place to work and learn!
